“Mohammad was a soft-spoken and mature presence in the shelter, often acting as a bridge between the Arabic-speaking children and the staff. He developed a strong grasp of both Greek and English, helped others adapt, and inspired participation through his quiet leadership”

Giannis, Shelter Coordinator at The HOME Project

After a long and emotionally taxing journey, 13-year-old Mohammad from Syria, has been reunited with his family in Germany.

He arrived at our shelter in May 2024. He was scared, alone, and unsure of what the future held –a young boy carrying the weight of uncertainty, yet holding onto hope. His dream was to join his uncle in Merseburg, but the road ahead was anything but easy. What followed was a complex and highly bureaucratic legal process, involving multiple appeals and months of waiting.

Our Child Protection Unit stood by Mohammad every step of the way, ensuring he received the comprehensive care and guidance he needed. He found safety and stability in our shelter, had access to healthcare, mental health counselling, legal assistance, education, and a wide range of recreational and cultural activities that helped him heal, regain trust, and strengthen his resilience.

A few weeks ago, his long-awaited dream became a reality. Before leaving, Mohammed spent his last day in Athens with his best friend from the shelter -exploring the city, visiting the Parthenon, and exchanging matching friendship rings as a symbol of their bond.

“Mohammad was a soft-spoken and mature presence in the shelter, often acting as a bridge between the Arabic-speaking children and the staff. He developed a strong grasp of both Greek and English, helped others adapt, and inspired participation through his quiet leadership”, says Shelter Coordinator, Giannis.

On behalf of everyone at The HOME Project, we wish Mohammad all the best as he begins this new and exciting chapter in his life.
